Urgent only
When to call who

Not sure where to go?

Use this quick guide when something feels urgent. When in doubt, call us, that’s what we’re here for.

Start here

Call us first — we can handle more than you think

At Mountain Ridge Pediatrics, we are equipped to handle many urgent needs right here in our office — saving you time, stress, and unnecessary trips elsewhere. We can evaluate and treat minor injuries and illnesses, including stitches, medical glue, casting and splinting, breathing treatments, steroid and antibiotic injections, oral rehydration, and ear piercing.

If you are concerned your child may need urgent care, please call our office first. We will help determine if we can safely care for your child in our clinic or guide you to the most appropriate setting. Because there is no dedicated pediatric urgent care or emergency room in our area, we are committed to helping families find the right care quickly and confidently.

Life-threatening emergency

Call 911 right away

Dial 911 if your child has any of the following. Don’t wait to call the office first.

  • Severe trouble breathing or blue lips/skin
  • Unresponsive, very limp, or hard to wake
  • Seizure, especially a first seizure
  • Major head injury, suspected broken bone with deformity, or major bleeding that won’t stop
  • Suspected poisoning with severe symptoms
Serious but stable

Go to the emergency department

For our families, the closest emergency department is Sentara RMH Hospital in Harrisonburg — note that RMH has no pediatricians or pediatric specialists on service. The closest dedicated pediatric ER is at UVA Health in Charlottesville, about an hour away. Go to an ER for things that can’t wait but aren’t immediately life-threatening, such as:

  • High fever in an infant under 2 months
  • Persistent vomiting with signs of dehydration (no wet diapers, dry mouth, very sleepy)
  • Severe pain that isn’t getting better
  • Suspected fracture or deep cut that may need stitches
  • Sudden, severe allergic reaction
During business hours

Call our office

For acute illnesses we typically see same-day, call us early in the day so we can fit you in. We don’t take walk-ins. Common reasons to call:

  • Fever in a child older than 2 months
  • Cough, sore throat, ear pain
  • Rash, vomiting/diarrhea without dehydration, possible UTI
Outside office hours

After-hours doctor line

For urgent questions that can’t wait until morning, call or text our on-call provider at (540) 249-1110. Effective June 1, 2025, there is a $20 fee for this service.

Non-urgent

Send a message via the Family Portal

For everything that can wait a couple of days, the Family Portal is the right place. We respond within two business days. Use it for refill requests, follow-up questions, and anything that isn’t time-sensitive.

What to expect

Visit types, explained.

Same-Day Sick Visits

Same-day appointments are offered for any acute illnesses that may arise — ear pain, coughing, fevers, and similar concerns. These visits must be scheduled before coming in. We do not offer walk-in appointments.

Video Telemedicine

Once your visit is scheduled, click the link below to join your provider from a phone, tablet, or computer. Telemedicine is billed to your insurance per your plan’s coverage; you may be responsible for charges depending on your benefits.
